Leadovator Showcase and Book Release Shared Experience RECAP
“Best book launch event ever,” was the most frequent comment shared from attendees on March 14, 2017, at the SOLD OUT Leadovator Showcase and bestselling book – The Innovation Revolution – release and signing event in Raleigh, NC.
This event was NOT a book-signing as usual. Instead, it was a shared experience to demonstrate the power of unleashing #hiddengenius to change the world. That’s exactly what we did.
I could have hogged the stoplight…it was my party after all, but that would have conflicted with the mission of my work and my book. I wrote the book to share proven methods for companies to change business-as-usual by empowering employees to innovate at speed and deliver results. Inspired by the absurdity of work I experienced in my career and featured in classic business satires like Dilbert and Office Space, I was determined to prove that work could be fun, productive and purposeful.
My mission was to field test with enterprise leaders and companies a way to overcome the soul-sucking internal dysfunction everyone knows about (insert eye roll) to deliver innovation consistently with the resources you already have – your employees. I did it and wrote it all down in the book to share.
A sold-out crowd arrived at the newly renovated Tobacco Road Raleigh Brewery to festive food and beverages, a fun selfie station and rapid-fire success stories from local leaders.
The formal program kicked off by ABC11 Morning and Noon News Anchor, Barbara Gibbs, who admitted she was going off script to speak from the heart saying,
“I wouldn’t do this for just anyone. I have to wake up at 2 am to prepare for the morning newscast, but this event I would not miss. You know when you meet someone who has a good head on her shoulders and are going places, well that describes Melissa Kennedy, our now bestselling author.”
Then I took the mic and shared my story. I shared some frequent terms and actions in the book, such as INTRApreneur and Leadovator and then facilitated the rapid success story round.
I wanted everyone to experience real-live-no-jive examples of the key themes and takeaways from the book, so I shared the stage with five local business leadovators – 21st-century leaders who drive consistent innovation and results by empowering inside entrepreneurs called INTRApreneurs. These leadovators from Cisco, IBM, NC State University, Lenovo, and CloudPassage shared a series of 60-second leadership success stories. But they weren’t the only key to this shared success before each leader spoke the crowd was engaged in offering a “Rockstar Roar” to inspire and extend confidence for the story kickoff and then were used as a time-management tool to clap each speaker off after their 60-seconds. It was fast-paced, high energy and engaging for everyone.
Before I headed to the book signing table, I thanked every single person by name that came to the event, that’s about 130 names. We did one final Rockstar Roar and held for the photo op to commemorate the occasion and inducted them into the Revolution to change business as usual.
The signing began with funky beats in the background. Selfies abounded and a signing line lasted more than 2 hours. It was so exciting to meet folks who are ready to say “no” to business as usual…”no” to losing ideas in the corporate quagmire….and yes, to empowering and delivering.
