Kennedy’s 2017 TedxLizardCreek Talk – The Return of the INTRApreneur
I had never been to Lizard Creek, NC. In fact, I had never heard of it. It’s a VERY small town in rural North Carolina right within a popular vacation community called Lake Gaston. I was honored to be selected as a featured speaker for my first TEdx event.
This event is exactly why Tedx was created. The local organizers had been to a TEdx event In Raleigh, NC in 2015 and absolutely had to have one in their community. They wanted to offer the same enlightening experience in their rural community that is traditionally only available in metropolitan areas. Many of the organizers personally funded the event in order to make it happen in their community. This was their second event.
It was truly a community event – from retirees to local middle schoolers from surrounding counties and everyone in between attended. It was held at the Lake Gaston Lion’s Club. Ladies from the community made big pots of homemade chili and beans and greens soup for lunch. There were a variety of homemade goodies, including some famous peanut brittle for dessert and snack. Imagine going to a southern church homecoming but with a diverse group of speakers sharing ideas worth spreading — well that is what TEdxLizardCreek was like.
I, personally, felt like I made a difference at this event sharing my story of incredible intrapreneurs — entrepreneurs working within the corporate framework — and the future of work. I hoped to inspire these community members and others that you don’t have to quit your job to innovate and make a difference. But you do have to transform from being an employee to an intrapreneur. And everyone has the power to do that within themselves.
The event was intimate, yet profound. I hope this Tedx and others like it inspire others in smaller or rural community to organize similar events to continue sharing ideas worth spreading.
Here is my 16-minute TedxLizardCreek talk. Enjoy!
